Junghans 1972 Competition - 27/4504.00

Bold, oval and unmistakably 1970s, the Junghans 1972 Competition (ref. 27/4504.00) is an automatic sports chronograph with serious presence on the wrist. Its crown and pushers sit at the top of the case, just as they would on a classic stopwatch, and the dark grey dial, finished with a sunburst and a matt transparent lacquer, sets off matt black totalisers and a tachymeter scale.

Inside, the self-winding J880.5 caliber powers the stop function, tachymeter, small seconds and date, with up to 48 hours of power reserve. The ellipsoidal stainless steel case measures 45.5 x 41.0mm and 14.5mm high, with a screwed crown and tube for 10 bar water resistance, a stainless steel case back retained by four screws and a flat, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Luminous hands and a luminous minute track keep it readable when the light fades, and a perforated black leather strap with grey lining leather, a stainless steel inlay held by two screws and a stainless steel folding clasp finish this German chronograph with retro confidence.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

Junghans' sports timekeeping goes back to the hand-held stopwatches it made in the 1920s. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Junghans timed many major sporting events and introduced technical innovations in sports timekeeping, and it was the official timekeeper of the 1972 Olympic Games. The 1972 line takes its name and style from that era, and the 1972 Competition echoes it directly with an oval case whose crown and pushers sit on top, in the manner of a classic stopwatch.
